Then an attack hits their convoy directly, or destroys the vehicle next to them, or kills someone they are sitting alongside. Or a mortar or rocket lands and kills and maims people in the very same location that used to seem relatively safe in the past. Or they witness an attack 200 yards ahead but are unable to do anything about it because the attackers are gone by the time they get there — or the car bomb has already exploded. Or they come across the charred remains of US military vehicles and dead American bodies stripped and mutilated.
