In my application, I explained that I wanted to spend the year of this fellowship (1951-52) at Harvard, and to work with Quine. My proposal was to use the verifiability theory of meaning to clarify the notion of the “logical form” of sentences in natural language. Since I received the fellowship, I naturally assumed that the proposal had been accepted. But I was in for a surprise. In the letter informing me that I had received the Rockefeller Fellowship, I was instructed to come to New York and talk to Chadbourne Gilpatric, an officer of the Foundation.
