Many settled in Shanghai, China, for the duration of the war. Among those Sugihara saved were a future Israeli religious affairs minister and a future speaker of the Knesset (Israeli congress). Giorgio Perlasca Giorgio Perlasca was an Italian fascist. He had fought with General Francisco Franco in the Spanish civil war. Hitler’s Germany had backed Franco in that war.
Neutral Portugal had offered asylum (safety) to refugees of whatever political or religious belief. That policy changed in May. The Portuguese government told consuls in France that visas could only be issued to people with a specific destination in Portugal. No visas at all could be issued to Jews. Most Portuguese consuls obeyed the order. Aristides de Sousa Mendes, Portuguese consul in Bordeaux, did not. He claimed that his nation’s constitution allowed asylum to anyone. The government gave him a direct order to stop his activities.
Their town’s work saved five thousand Jewish lives. Centuries prior to this, French Catholics had persecuted Protestants. Some Huguenots, as the Protestants were known, escaped to southern France. One group settled in the village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. Their descendants knew how it felt to be part of a religious minority. They accepted people of other faiths. Le Chambon residents did not see Jews as vicious Christ killers, as some other Christians did. Instead, they saw religious links between Judaism and Christianity.
