Bombing raids. Apparently with the encouragement of his brother Philip, also a priest, Daniel Berrigan was moved to more overt action after his return from Hanoi. In May 1968 the two Berrigans, along with seven other Catholic protesters, entered a draft office in Catonsville, Maryland, and burned the draft cards there using napalm. For his actions Berrigan was found guilty of conspiracy and destruction of government property and sentenced to three years in prison. Before his sentence began, however, he went underground.
The defeat of the Japanese in August, however, meant also the defeat of Bao Dai’s new regime. The emperor was thwarted by Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh in September 1945, when the Communists proclaimed their own independent Vietnamese republic. Ho had BAO DAI persuaded Bao Dai to abdicate his throne on August 25. Under the name of “First Citizen Vinh Thuy,” the former emperor took a position within the new Viet Minh government. He quickly grew disillusioned with communism, however, and finding himself unable to effectively serve his people, he left Vietnam for China in 1946 and Europe the next year.
