In January 1941, he still knew too little about the vozhd. a. Dzhugashvili Iosif Vissarionovich Stalin had created so many myths about himself that at some point he probably became confused about his own true identity. In people’s eyes, he had no nationality, no homeland, no family, and virtually no past. In a word, he was almost divine. His biographies dripped with praise for his wisdom and stature but provided very few details about his life. If Stalin could have erased his past altogether, he would have done so, for he hated almost everything about it.

Hitler had also agreed to the Soviet Union’s sphere of influence in the rest of Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary. Having dangled the expansionist lure, the vozhd returned to larger issues. It was likely, he said, that Germany would lose the war. In principle, its defeat could result in its Sovietization. However, if the war was short, Britain and France would have enough resources to intervene militarily and crush a Communist government in Berlin. So, he argued, the Soviet Union had to do everything possible to prolong the war and exhaust the Western powers.

Hitler proposed partitioning the British Empire. To that end, he envisaged a pact of four — Germany, Italy, Japan, and the Soviet Union, all vowing “to respect each other’s natural interests,” which in Stalin’s case involved the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea coast. It was then that Stalin became confused and overambitious, demanding from Hitler the whole of Finland, Romania, and Bulgaria and also pieces of Turkey, Hungary, and Iran. Czarist Russia had never controlled those vast, strategically important areas, and it was clear that Stalin wanted a dominant position in continental Eurasia.
