Example text

To avoid such an outrage to our moral sense we must adopt the central principle to regulate our thinking, even though we cannot know it to be true. Hegel is content with no such qualified satisfaction of the primary impulse of speculative philosophy of history. For him nothing needs to proceed in the Kantian ‘as if’ mode. The central principle, as he understands it, can, he is convinced, be properly established by reason, and counts as wholly genuine knowledge. This contrast gives a radically different significance to his philosophy of history in general, one that ensures its distinctive identity and true independence of its great precursor.

It has to be asked how the strategy deals with the spectre of scepticism, a question that must arise for any foundational arguments in philosophy. The second aspect arises from the possibility that in due course the logic of the phenomenological process will have to be invoked to explicate Hegel’s historical dialectic. With that in view, one needs to look more closely at the source of the abounding and unquenchable energy of the movement. Scepticism Both aspects may be introduced by noting some dramatic claims made in the Phenomenology.

Thus, the detailed exposition of Hegel’s system in these works begins with a movement of thought that is curiously analogous to what one finds in the Introduction, a displacing elsewhere of responsibility for justifying the basic 27 PRESUPPOSITIONS premises of the discussion. As the Science of Logic makes plain, it is ultimately displaced on to the Phenomenology. There, it appears, is where all the ladders start. The way in which the Phenomenology achieves its results should be looked at more closely.
