Zhukov was told to encircle the German Central Front army from the south, while the Kalinin Front did so from the north, and it was to be completed by January 11. Stalin said nothing about the difficulties he was forcing on his commanders. The temperature had dropped to thirty to forty degrees below zero, and snowfalls obliterated the roads.
The Russians have cut its communications. " It was basically the same all along the German line. Army Group Center was disintegrating. Field Marshal Kluge, who had taken over from the totally dispirited Bock as commander of Army Group Center, tried to get permission for the armies to withdraw to safety. Hitler refused. Kluge said that his troops were mentally and physically exhausted. "If that is true," said Hitler, "then it is the end of the German army," and hung up the telephone on the field marshal.
