That question is: Given a mind-dependent primary quality A and a mind-independent quality B, how could B be sufficiently similar to A in relevant respects (or vice versa) to count as a primary quality? To answer this question one has to explain how the relevant similarity is possible. As a prelude to answering the question, it is useful to observe that if there are, as Locke thought, mind-independent objects with mind-independent geometrical features, then those objects must have qualities that are analogous, in significant respects, to Berkelean secondary qualities.
