Richard Hakluyt, “Discourse Concerning Westerne Planting,” 1584 The purpose of this unpublished state paper, written by Richard Hakluyt in 1584 was to stir interest in colonization of the Western Hemisphere. It was there that his interest in the explorations of the European powers was fueled. He later published a collection of eyewitness accounts and other records of English and foreign explorers in an enlarged, reconstructed edition called The Principal Navigations, Voyages and Discoveries of the English Nation (1598–1600), one of the most important collections of exploration documents in existence.

Children are nursed to the age of twelve years, when they are old enough to gather their own food. We asked them why they brought their children up in that way and they replied, it was owing to the great scarcity of food all over that country, since it was common (as we saw) to be without it two or three days, and even four, and for that reason they nursed the little ones so long to preserve them from perishing through hunger. And even if they should survive, they would be very delicate and weak.
